February 2002

Executive Director's Corner

Dear Parents/Guardians, Staff and Consumers:

The month of January just blew by, I must say that the South Carolina January weather was much more enjoyable than I was accustomed to being from North East Ohio.

A special "Thank You" to past Board member Roy Lewis and the "Woodmen of the World" for the recent donation, set up and landscaping of a new flag pole here at our Marion Center. Also a "Thank You" to Representative Jim Battle for providing us a flag which has flown over our State Capital! We will reserve this flag for use on special events and Holidays. Again, on behalf of the Board, staff and clients thank you for this wonderful donation.

The process for the new workshop building is moving along. I recently received the go-ahead from our State Department to sign the architectural services agreement. Now, our building committee will meet a couple more times to complete the design process and we will go to bid. A very special Thank You to our State Director, Dr. Stanley Butkus and his staff for their continuing support and assistance on this project.

The last item for my February article deals with phone calls into our center. We welcome your calls and always try to accommodate our callers wishes. But many times our direct service staff are involved in training programs and when they are not they always are working with the adults in their groups, when we call someone away to the phone, other staff must "cover" their group. This can be very difficult particularly for managing adults with certain behaviors, personal and service needs. Quite honestly there are some days when this situation causes serious problems due to the number of calls. Maybe you can help us by calling at the end of the day to talk to staff about those things that can wait until then. Your help will be appreciated.

HAVE A GOOD MONTH!

Douglas F. Reynolds, Executive Director

FLU Season is Upon Us...

Flu season usually ranges from November through April. December, January, February and March are the months that have the heaviest flu activity. Typical flu symptoms include fever, body aches, tiredness, cough and sometimes a sore throat and runny nose. The flu and cold are both respiratory infections caused by viruses. Some of the symptoms are similar. However, the flu can cause more serious illness than the common cold. People at the greatest risk of severe complications from flu are those 65 years old or older and those with certain medical conditions. Your best protection against the flu is an annual flu shot.
